1. What is facebook?
"Facebook is a free-access**social networking**website that is operated and**privately owned**by Facebook, Inc.**[1**] Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves. The website's name refers to the paper facebooks depicting members of a**campus**community that some**US****colleges**and**preparatory schools**give to incoming students, faculty, and staff as a way to get to know other people on campus."
As mentioned above, facebook is mainly the focus to reunite individuals together all around the world with the aid of this Web 2.0 technology. The main aim of this website facilitated technology is for individuals to retrive information, earn more about themselves and keep incontact with others that are member or friends on their own profile orientated facebook."
2. How does facebook assist in TEFL?
Facebook can assist in TEFL in a variety of ways. Students can build their own facebook profile in reference to their course or their English class where they can add their classmates and be able to communicate with one other to not only form a more comfortable environment in the classroom, however, also have the ability to talk and retrieve help from one another when they are working individually at home. They can do group activities while having an online chat and also write on eachother walls where the other classmates can visit and see how to work on an in particular subject or topic introduced in class. Students can also be more flexible to contact their teacher via their facebook if their is anything they didn't understand or had trouble with.
Not only does facebook aid in the communication with others, however, their are particular games that are played online to aid in their vocabulary skills, mathamatics, general knowledge and the development on their observation skills, such an activity is called "Word Challenge" and "Who has the biggest brain?" which are all competition based activities. Students also can do most of their search on facebook to find some examples on essays and books via having a link on their facebook instead of constantly finding sources browsing on the net for them, for example the application "FreestudentEdu.com" which is actually an application that could be added easily. Their are also fantastic trivia game activities where not only could students have some fun, however, learn some useful information while playing this application which can also be played only a link away from entering one's facebook, where students can become a member on the website and continue to plat to retrive prizes for each answer they get correct. It's enjoyable and a lot to learn from.
Search for L2 activities which use the technology you have chosen to present, and describe and evaluate them.
2. L2 activity evaluation 4.As a result of all this, come up with your own idea of how to use each tool.Describe the idea.
With the examples mentioned above, each tool can be easily used in a classroom by breaking the students into groups or working on the application individually to see how much each student/students obtained as a score, which therefore, as the term progresses I would ask each students to keep working and playing the applcation in their own free time and as a final class activity the students will once again play the tool and see how much they have developed and progressed in their vocabulary skills and their memory skills and to see how much they enjoyed the application and what they actually learnt from such an application. Students will not only share with the rest of the class what they have learnt from the application, however, they will also self assess themselves and criticize and evaluate what their difficulties are and how much they have learnt from such difficulties.
5.Extension (extra marks): Apply the idea, in other words develop an activity using each tool.
The activities evaluated are quite self explanatory and can only be implemented in various ways in a classroom. To further elaborate on how to develop such an activity, I would let students take the quiz in this format as done from word challens and who has the biggest brain and apply them as a group activity on the whiteboard. For instance, I would divide the class into two and give students 6 letters on the board and with their group try and come up with as many words as possible and see which group obtained more words than the other. Not only is this an enjoyable break for students to have fun but will also help students come up with as many words as possible and also learn what each words means.
